Description:

This turned out to be one of those surprise machines; I thought the consensus was that this Empire branded Skyriter is a poor machine in use, so it was nice to discover, at least with this particular machine, that it's rather good at what it does.

Its performance aside, it's interesting to note the drastic changes that were made to the line space lever between the 2Y and 4Y models. The original lever was clearly designed to help make the typewriter ultra compact, a true sky writer, but that philosophy changed at some point, and by the time the 4Y was introduced the lever was big enough to be used on a standard typewriter.
