192x Underwood Bookkeeping Machine Serial # 18351 192x Underwood Bookkeeping Machine typewriter, Serial # 18351 Erik Bruchez's 192x Underwood Bookkeeping Machine typewriter. 2023-11-19 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Erik Bruchez: 192x Underwood Bookkeeping Machine Serial # 18351 This is definitely not pretty!

There is significant evidence for the existence of the Underwood Bookkeeping Machine, in the form of ads from the 1920s as well as even an operator's manual (which I scanned and uploaded on Archive.org). But this is the only extant instance of an Underwood Bookkeeping Machine that I know of!

This instance is missing its entire carriage, and its base, which might have come with an electric motor. It is currently not much more than a very heavy hunk of rusty metal. But can it really be disposed of if there is no other instance around?

I wonder whether a standard Underwood carriage could fit on it. If so, a restoration might be possible.

I started collecting my first pre-WW2 standard typewriters in 2017. Since then I have added a few machines to my collection, which now ranges from the 1890s to the 1980s. As of 2020, I have more big standard (desktop) typewriters than portables, and a few standard electrics.
