1910 Royal Bar-lock 10 Serial # 169738 1910 Royal Bar-lock 10 typewriter, Serial # 169738 fausto tomesani's 1910 Royal Bar-lock 10 typewriter. 2024-01-03 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of fausto tomesani: 1910 Royal Bar-lock 10 Serial # 169738 This is a very beautiful Royal Bar-Lock 10, from 1909 or 1910.
“Bar-Lock” typewriters were originally invented in US by Charles Spiro, a great typewriter pioneer.
It’s a typewriter quite particular with many differences from the nowadays typewriters.
It has long typing bars and a double keyboard.
It is of course a British made typewriter.
There is a very nice brass shield painted black with the embossed name Bar-Lock.
The decorated semi-oval cover, in addition to embellishing the machine, protected the writing bars mechanism.
The “Bar-lock” name derive from a system of alignment of the typing bars, with a row of vertical pins in front of the roller.
When you type a character, the bar is blocked by a series of small pins which prevent it from oscillating and distorting the writing.
The bars are locked by these pins, hence the name.
Since there is a character for every button, also every bar has one character.
The keyboard has 88 buttons, and there are two sets of letters, with the universal QWERTY system, both uppercase and lowercase, with different colours.
The keyboards were commonly made with black and white diversification of keyboards for lowercase and uppercase letters.
