I purchased a typewriter from a local Antique dealer/secondhand shop in Bridgwater, Somerset, UK. It was intended as a present for my wife as a decorative item for her home office. She had been a secretary and started her career using a manual typewriter. All I knew about it when I reserved it online was that it was a Smith Corona portable. When we got it home I was fascinated by the condition and history of it. It had baggage labels stuck on the case for the P & O Steam Navigation company and the British India Steam Navigation company which indicated that it was quite old. I then found the Typewriter database and with the serial number discovered that it had been made in 1941 and exported to the UK. The serial number had an X after it plus underneath Corona on the front cover was âMade in USAâ which confirmed it was an export model. It is in exceptional condition with no wear on the keys or space bar. The only problem I have seen so far is a couple of key levers which are bent.
