I have been writing for most of my life, keeping journals or sending letters. I found a very neglected Olympia SM3 wide carriage model at a church yard sale. The asking price was 3.00. My wife said it will only take up space. The lady selling items said, "It is yours for 1.00!" And so I bought it. None of the type bars moved of if so just barely. I cleaned this fine machine in good time and found it had an excellent snap to it when pressing the keys. I was smitten with the design. My only other typewriter prior to the new find SM3 was a very battered Remington circa 1920s. I soon found typing with a typewriter was an experience in writing that I was liberating, inspirational and just plain fun. I have since collected at least 220 manual machines and do own some electric models (IBM). My preference is manual. I love German manufactured machines and enjoy the excellent American models. The collection contains at least 80 German machines. The bulk of the rest of this collection is American. There are some from Japan, Holland, England, Spain, China and Mexico as well. Name brands include Voss, Olympia, Adler, Smith Corona, Hermes, Royal, Underwood, Remington, Brother, Torpedo, and Oliver. I consider myself an enthusiast. 90% of my collection works proficiently.
