The Royal Futura 400 is the machine I learned to type on at home. My father purchased one in the 1960s, and toted it around the globe, thinking every businessman should have one close at hand. He reports that he rarely typed on it while away. It remained in the household until sometime in the 1990s. Upon it were typed many resumes, letters to the editor, and quite a few poems. The family machine has departed, but I've acquired this one in its place.
The 400 occupies the budget end of the Futura line, and is more collectible than the more fully-equipped 800 . Why? Well, the 800 was only about $20 more, and offered more features. Thus, the 800 sold more robustly. I've noticed that the 400 (and the 600) command heavy prices on eBay.
The Landis Typewriter Co., where this machine originates, sold Futuras from 1958 through at least 1962.
