Description:
Brother Deluxe 100. This is quite a barebones typewriter, but it has its charm. There isn't a leaver to change the key resistance, but it has a nice typing feel already, so I didn't mind. When I did mind was the metal clanking sound during every key stroke and spacebar press.
I added new padding around the entire machine to reduce the hollow sound the machine had. Next, I added padding under the spacebar to eliminate the metal banging sound when pressing down and releasing the spacebar. Similarly, I added padding under and over the bar that governs the carriage shift so that there isn't a loud bang Everytime I use a capital character. Lastly, I added foam around the type slugs. In the future, I may add some self adhesive weights to the spacebar to give it make more weight. It sounds great, but the weight would give it an overall better typing feel.

I'm a software engineer in the Chicagoland area. I've been collecting "vintage" vinyl, computers, mechanical keyboards and typewriters since I was a kid. Born into an analog world, but grew up in a digital one.
My wife is a writer and I enjoy problem solving and puzzles, so naturally fixing I fell in love with fixing and maintaining typewriters and she then gets to enjoy all of these machines!
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Kmart (Brother) 100 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Kmart (Brother) Serial Number page and the Kmart (Brother) 100 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
