1941 Smith Corona Sterling Serial # 3A 99168 1941 Smith Corona Sterling typewriter, Serial # 3A 99168 Fred Mi's 1941 Smith Corona Sterling typewriter. 2024-12-16 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Fred Mi: 1941 Smith Corona Sterling Serial # 3A 99168 For a long time, my wife and I had been searching for a typewriter. We often visited antique stores, but we never found anything suitable—everything was either too rusty or too large. One day, when the weather wasn't good for a countryside trek, we decided to visit a recycling artisans' exposition.

There, among various scraps, we found a charming typewriter lying alone on the ground. We asked about the price, and after a brief discussion, we bought it. It came almost complete with its original case (though without a key) and a ribbon. Some keytops were damaged, and the rear nameplate was missing. However, it was in good condition overall, with minimal rust or dust. A few typebars were sticky, two had disconnected links, and the on-foot was not correct. This is a french keyboard and a Pica font (10 cpi). Thanks to the tutorials by Duane Jensen from Phoenix Typewriter, I was able to fix these issues.

The serial number indicates a fabrication date within the first two months of 1942, just a few weeks before the US industry entered the World War II effort period. At that time, all typewriter manufacturers were required to reallocate their facilities to produce arms and ordnance.

Corona Speedline Sterling 3A owner. Trying to make it work as a charm with no help in my neighborhood as such typewriter was scarcely sold in France... So I just rely on Internet tutorial and online help through social networks. Many thanks to the TW community !
