Description:
This is a Thürey model 1 from 1909. This unique style typewriter with its "Reformtastatur" (reform-keyboard) was one of the very last attempts to establish something other than a QWERTZ layout in germany. The idea of the layout was to shift the main work away from the smaller, weaker fingers. Unfortunately it was too late and the Thürey vanished again in 1912. Very few examples survived to present day. (Currently (2026) a total of 14 machines are known to still exist.)
This one is currently missing the slider to set the left margin (where that row of holes is). I will try to fabricate a proper replacement.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Thürey 1 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Thürey Serial Number page and the Thürey 1 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
