Serial Number Table Last Edited: 08/28/16 06:45
NOTE: dates shown are JAN 1 unless noted, so the serial number shown is the *first* serial number produced the given year. Exceptions are serial numbers preceded by "up to"(where you can assume that the numbers reported in that subsection are DECEMBER 31, END OF YEAR NUMBERS) or rows where a month is given in the month column. If the serial number is shown as a range (xxxx-xxxx) it indicates that we know the entire range of serial numbers for the given year.
Issued May 30, 1854
Built in 1887 from a design patented by Robert S. Thomas in 1854, the
Pearl is a transverse linear index machine manufactured by Enoch Prouty of Chicago,
Ill., USA, who also made printing presses.
Not to be confused with the later "Sjoberg" Pearl or the "Searing" Pearl, both from 1891.

||1887||The Pearl had characters for upper and lower-case, numerals, and punctuation on different linear elements, and rotating the handle moved the appropriate type element into place. Very substantial and heavy for an index typewriter. Only one example known.||5|
