Built in 1887 from a design patented by Robert S. Thomas in 1854, the Pearl is a transverse linear index machine manufactured by Enoch Prouty of Chicago, Ill., USA, who also made printing presses.
Not to be confused with the later "Sjoberg" Pearl or the "Searing" Pearl, both from 1891.

1887 The Pearl had characters for upper and lower-case, numerals, and punctuation on different linear elements, and rotating the handle moved the appropriate type element into place. Very substantial and heavy for an index typewriter. Only one example known. 5
