Consul: Typewriter Brand Notes

Zbrojovka Brno, in Brno, Czechoslovakia, began manufacturing typewriters (under license from REMINGTON) in 1932. The name ZETA was adopted for standards, postwar. The name CONSUL was first used in about 1953, and CONSUL portables were introduced about then. [Will Davis, Tilman Elster]

A sticker can often be found on the bottom of these machines that states the manufacture date. "I've managed to pin down a year for a pre-1960 Consul mid-size portable serial number. I have a manufacturing date of 11-1958 for the SN ZP-98292" [Nick Beland]

Serial Number Table Last Edited: 05/12/13 11:23
NOTE: dates shown are JAN 1 unless noted, so the serial number shown is the *first* serial number produced the given year. Exceptions are serial numbers preceded by "up to"(where you can assume that the numbers reported in that subsection are DECEMBER 31, END OF YEAR NUMBERS) or rows where a month is given in the month column. If the serial number is shown as a range (xxxx-xxxx) it indicates that we know the entire range of serial numbers for the given year.

Models and s/n Y M D Remarks Ref.
up to 1960     The serial numbers from the Remington license models before 1960 seem to have the prefix "ZP" 12
#MM(M)ssssss from 1960     The first digit of serial number indicates the year of production (4 means 1964), followed by model number (2 or 3 digits), followed by the machine's s/n of 6 digits 12
