Patented in 1886 by Daniel Edgar Kempster of Boston, Mass., USA assisted by Willard Herbert Gilman.
In January 1889, improvements to Kempster's design were patented by Eugene Irvin Blount and James Henry Currier of Somerville, Mass., USA.
Finally, in September 1889, Kempster, Blount, Currier and Benjamin Dore, of Lynn, Massachusetts, jointly patented the produced version.
The so-called "one-finger typewriter" designed by Frederic Webster Howe in 1891 was directly based on the Boston.
This machine should not be confused with the much simpler Boston index typewriter sold in Europe by World.
