1933 Underwood Universal

Serial #E664902

I paid more for this than I wanted, in my age-old quest to buy favour with local pickers, but I think I might have done okay. I believe I'm right that this is a Universal, though I'd happily be corrected. I looked up and down the Internet to find out more about the E prefix, and a member in a Yahoo group suggested it denotes a De Luxe Universal model. Could it also stand for Elliott-Fisher? Or mean that it was manufactured in Canada? Could I be wrong and this is a Champion? I find it difficult to distinguish between the models of this era. The keytops are white. The paper bail simply says Underwood on it, and now lies flat. It's stamped Underwood Elliott-Fisher on the back, and Made in Canada. In any case, a nice little machine. Except it's missing a drawstring, and its case.

I have suddenly become a typewriter collector. It started with one purchase and has ballooned to a collection of more than forty in less than a year. I'm learning fast but I'm still a novice compared to others in the typosphere, including here in Toronto, where I haunt thrift shops and antique markets, and even the occasional basement. I'm a former magazine writer and published author, and a professional book editor by trade, and I learned to type on manuals despite the proliferation of electrics, so I like to think I come by my sudden and rather manic passion honestly.
