1947 Royal Quiet De Luxe

Serial #A-1344297

A thrift store purchase. Though the case was moldy, the typewriter was in fine condition. Types nicely.

"Shift Freedom" was a marketing ploy: "Either Shift Key puts into effect Shift Freedom, an original Royal feature which eliminates the noise and eyestrain of a bobbing carriage by lowering the type for capital letters instead of raising the carriage." -- from a Royal manual

I don't think this feature was new in the 1940s.

"Quiet"? Not at all. Just like any other Royal. Not loud, but no noise reduction elements.
