1948 Smith Corona Clipper

Serial #4C 233581

This machine has gathered dust the past couple of years after it returned from a period of being out on loan with the z and ;/: keys disconnected and I became frustrated trying to reconnect them. Figuring out the best strategy for reconnecting on my Smith Corona Silent last night led to an hour with a 1/8 inch flathead screwdriver and a tiny pair of needlenose pliers (the z's connecting piece was bent). I'm delighted that it's ready to type again! It features the floating shift and a larger font than I typically like, but it types well and the larger font is still graceful. I love the picture of the airplane at top left.

I started collecting typewriters in 1996 when my employer at an old newsstand in Kalamazoo, MI gave me her mother's Underwood Elliot Fisher Noiseless; I love these machines and learning how to repair and maintain them. The Noiseless was the medium for a zine I wrote through the nineties and into the oughts, and my nine-year-old daughter now types regularly.
