1924 L.C. Smith 8

Serial #548028 - 8

Back and front of the panel from the left side.

I spotted this machine a while ago on ebay and once the price dropped I bid and won.

This machine started life as a open machine and then it was fitted with the front and side panels of a later machine, probably a Secretarial because of the green color. The only part of the machine that does not have a panel fitted is the back that would not have mounting points for a panel or frame at all. Also, the backspace key and ribbon key are of an earlier style. The closed machines that I have seen usually have smaller backspace and ribbon keys.

This is the kind of machine that I like to find because it keeps me thinking; Why did this machine have the panels added? Who added them and when?

Even stranger is the side panels are green on the inside, but black on the outside, yet the front panel is green back and front.

Serial number was found behind the front panel.

Overall this machine is very nice to use.

Left the collection on 1/16/2018.

I started collecting typewriters several years ago and it started with a late 1960s Smith-Corona Sterling portable that I got as a gift.

Despite the "Smith & Corona" on the front plate, this is a Smith & Bros. according to the front frame. Front plate added at a later time/from another, later, machine.
