1914 Underwood 5

Serial #0-720234-3

A challenge. There is no other word for this typewriter.

I got it in a miserable condition. Rust everywhere, and everything was covered with some sticky stuff, as if someone had completely greased it. For what I managed to learn, this machine had ben lying in a warehouse by the sea in Barcelona for many decades, and I´m trying to do something about it.

The cleaning process will be long, dismantling everything, cleaning it piece by piece and then putting it back together, with the (maybe vain) hope of making it work again because it seems to be complete and beneath the damage there is a beautiful typewriter.

There has been a bit of a challenge with the identification, too. I think it´s a Nº 5, and the serial number is so damaged I needed a powerful flashlight and pencil and paper to make out something, but I hope I got it right.

The first typewriter I saw was my grandpa´s Olivetti Linea 98 at the office. It was just a curio for me. Then I was given a Nakajima, which I didn´t use and my grandfather took it from me because it was easier to handle than the bulky Linea 98.

Now I own that typewriter, and I started a little collection in Valladolid, Spain. The Nakajima, which is "my" typewriter is the only one which is NOT in my collection. How ironic...

Things then got... complex. I moved from Valladolid to my village, and suddenly found myself with a lot of room available at home, so the small collection is turning into something bigger, a nuisace for my family and a great source of satisfaction for me.
