1959 Hermes 3000

Serial #3022960

Purchased via craigslist in Blacksburg, Virginia for $35. I bought this from the original owner, who bought it new and had it custom built with the umlaut and double S (looks like B) for German language use. He also had the brackets added, and this is my only machine in my collection with [brackets]. He was a really cool guy and his career included Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Virginia Tech from 1986 to 1994. He claimed not to have used his typewriter since working in the academic field since he had a secretary. Documents created on this machine include his PhD dissertation. He seemed to be an avid typewriter enthusiast, even suggesting that Olivettis were "flimsy" compared to the Swiss-built Hermes typewriters. In spite of his slight on Olivettis which I do love I decided I liked the man a lot and I was very thankful I was the one who saw the deal on craigslist both getting a very good deal and the opportunity to meet a friendly and fascinating person.

I am an aspiring novelist and avid typewriter enthusiast from the New River Valley in Virginia. I am a proud Virginia Tech graduate with an education in creative writing. I use typewriters for all my writing and am working on a novel. I also do street poetry. I often can be found writing on one of my machines in downtown Blacksburg and enjoying a drink.
