1967 Webster XL-500

Serial #L7779965

Made by Brother of Nagoya, Japan in 1967. This Webster XL-500 is an impressive little machine. It types quite well, looks good on paper. This one has an elite, 12-pitch typeface. The touch control is VERY useful and wide-ranging. All metal body and ribbon cover. Tabulator only works by incrementing 10 spaces each time you push it. Smooth carriage and quiet and what seems to be a reasonably precision escapement mechanism. I must admit that I'm a bit surprised at just how nice of a typewriter this is. I expected something that felt cheaper and operated with more slop than this. The case is in pretty good shape too, and the manual was with it as well. A nice machine, recommended.

I've spent my life as a mechanical and electronics tinkerer, bikes, cars, lawnmowers, appliances, cameras, audio gear, guitars, amplifiers, and pedal steel guitars. I was trained as a typist for 2 years back in the late 70's on IBM Selectric II's. At home I recall my mother having an Olympia SM3. More recently we got our daughter a typewriter for Christmas, and that somehow sparked my own personal interest in these fine and interesting machines. Now it's a habit that just won't quit. Daily searches on Craigslist, frequent trips to antique stores & malls, garage sales, etc. It's a fun and healthy addiction.
