A budget machine sold through Montgomery Ward stores. You could get a free set of budget encyclopedias in some cases. Built in the brand spanking new plant in Springfield, Missouri, it was a sad end to the once mighty QDL.
This example has an inconsistent right margin, and I hate the Royal portable margin stop anyway, but this one is a pia. Trip and space skip sometimes and at others it trips the margin over the stop for a nice center spring fed snap. These last gasp machines defy any attempt to type fast. This one also has a cover off another machine, so a bit of a two tone. Like most, one machine had a broken cover clip to the goofy push button gimmick. How many of these do we see with covers popped up? All sorts of tape was used in attempts to hold it down. But at least it didn't get the faux orange denim case that turn to turd and are impossible to clean.
And soon Montgomery Ward will start carrying good typewriters from Brother.

As with many, the bug is back there somewhere due to an Underwood No. 5. My grandfather was on a small town school board and used one for this. My parents had a yellow Royal Safari that I used to index card everything, including a beer can collection. Collection syndrome clue! The long dormant tic was activated when my neighbors left a Remington Quiet Riter on the curb when they moved in circa 2010, Yes a believe it or not story is next, when a Hermes 3000 comes home with the girlfriend from work for free. Yes, free! From there the addiction is full steam. And yes, I now have a No. 5. Typewriters are the perfect blend of using one's technical skills, history and functional purpose.
