1961 Adler Primus Serial # 1648749 1961 Adler Primus typewriter, Serial # 1648749 Jayson Cottle's 1961 Adler Primus typewriter. 2022-07-18 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Jayson Cottle: 1961 Adler Primus Serial # 1648749 The Adler Primos, another fine West German made machine.
Though it has no key pressure adjustment it has good tension, is easy to use, and is not tiring to the hands. The feel of the keys is smooth through the entire stroke with a crisp strike against the paper leaving a good clear impression.
This machine is reasonably quiet. There are no rattles, squeaks, or offensive vibrations. The sound deadening in this machine is in good condition and fully functional. Instead of a sharp crack of the type slugs against the paper and platen it is more a muted thwap. Even the bell is a bit subdued.
Some of the problems of this machine are the typical Adler and Adler Primos problems. The aluminum carry case has the typical chipping and failing paint, A simple repaint will bring the case back to 100% quite nicely but I think I will likely leave it as it is. The rubber grommets used to hold the bottom of the case to the typewriter are permanently squished, leaving the typewriter stuck to the bottom of the case requiring you to reach inside the machine from the top with a small screwdriver to remove the E clips that are holding the rubber grommets to the locking device. The adhesives used for the Adler decals has hardened and the decals had fallen off. Amazingly they were kept with the machine and I was able to put them back in place. And of course the platen is a little on the hard side, it still prints very good on a single sheet of paper and it prints slightly darker when you're using a backing sheet.
All in all, a very good machine. I'm surprised I don't see more of them.

Hello!
My name is Jayson, I live in remote Alaska, and I love the outdoors. My hobbies include hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, and when I'm traveling I'm collecting things I can't get locally. One item is typewriters.
Being remote such as I am the written or typed word is still very important, whether it is to keep in touch with family and friends or getting a shopping list to the store so a load of groceries can be sent out on the mail plane within a week or two.
Fun fact, in town mail gets flown to Anchorage 410 miles away to be sorted and flown back to be delivered In town! The perfect illustration of government at work. But I digress.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Adler Primus on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Adler Serial Number page and the Adler Primus By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
