1941 Underwood Universal Serial # 1429690 1941 Underwood Universal typewriter, Serial # 1429690 Mark Petersen's 1941 Underwood Universal typewriter. 2015-08-28 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Mark Petersen: 1941 Underwood Universal Serial # 1429690 Seems to follow the normal serial # for the Universal. This was a dream machine for a long time, scored it on shopgoodwill.com for $110 including shipping. Needed a new motor which I stole from a parts machine, and feet which I bought from Tony Casillo which work great. Still needs a case.
There are 4 differences I can find between this machine and other Universals:
1) The US Navy decal
2) 9 cpi pitch
3) All capital letters
4) A lock to secure the carriage from bobbing when the shift key is not depressed. See photos.

Yellow arrow points toward a catch attached to the carriage which is pushed back when the shift key is pressed, the green arrow points to a disc the catch hooks onto. This keeps the carriage from bobbing with the vibrations in a ship or an airplane.
