1954 Mercedes K45 Serial # 244296/1 1954 Mercedes K45 typewriter, Serial # 244296/1 Massimo Martelancz's 1954 Mercedes K45 typewriter. 2020-06-11 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Massimo Martelancz: 1954 Mercedes K45 Serial # 244296/1 The K45 was a clear derivation of 1930s models like "Prima", "Selecta" and "Superba", very popular in Germany before the WWII. It was produced in Eastern Germany, after the war the Zella-Mehlis Thuringia plant was under the control of the Soviet Union, and it was intended especially for domestic use or for export to the countries of Eastern Europe. It was not a great innovation in design, not so different from a machine built 20 years earlier, apart from the grey color. But mechanically it was well built, this specimen is in perfect working order after almost 70 years.

I have been an Italian typewriter collector for many many years. At that time, I loved very old typewriters from late 1800s to early 1900s. After a break of a few years I returned to collect typewriters but no longer so old, I prefer now the design of the 40's, 50's and 60's. Yes, I am an affectionate collector of Olivetti, of course, but I'm attracted to all the other brands from that period, not just Italian.
