1951 Remington All-New Serial # A2144697 1951 Remington All-New typewriter, Serial # A2144697 Jerry Himes's 1951 Remington All-New typewriter. 2024-10-07 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Jerry Himes: 1951 Remington All-New Serial # A2144697 A charming little machine with interesting aesthetics and a strangely soothing, relaxed and "gentlemanly" type action. Despite the sorry state of the machine when discovered, I was amazed to notice that the platen was still very soft. Excellent print quality and quite quiet, perhaps owing partly to the soft platen. Sadly the paper table was missing, which is not uncommon for these. Also no carrying case. The ribbon rings were also gone, but you can easily install the ribbons without them as well, as long as you have the lids.

It looked like someone had modded the keyboard and even carved/drilled some of the symbols on the plastic keys himself, which looked like they were unmarked keys taken from another Remington. Those keys and the Finnish specific Å, Ä and Ö keys are of a slightly different shade of green, although the shape is similar. A bit of a mystery machine.

Pica typeface with the old Finnish Standard keyboard layout.

I really did not want to sell this, but decided to get rid of any machines without a carrying case, besides perhaps one or two standards or portables. This one went almost right away, despite its apparent flaws.

Sold in October 2024.

I have been looking for ways to spend less time on electronic devices, and because of this I started doing my writing and translation work with pens and pencils, and now on typewriters as well. I have noticed that adding typewriters to the process has been beneficial to the quality of the text, plus it's just more fun this way.

I have started selling and giving away some of my machines now that I have figured out which ones I want to keep. Some people have asked me for working typewriters, so I have been on the lookout for machines purely for that purpose as well. As fun and instructive as it has been, soon it is time to finish this collecting and tinkering and move back to my original intention: writing. I hope.
