In 1890, Lucien Stephen Crandall designed a linear index machine that was briefly manufactured as the "International" by the New American Manufacturing Company, Parish, New York, USA. By 1893, it had been supplanted by two new 4 and 6 bank upstroke designs also called the "International".

1892 Double keyboard with 2 banks of 3 rows, upstrike with cloud-shaped cutouts in the side of the frame. Inking by ribbon that runs parallel to the carriage but does not travel from spool to spool. It is fixed to brackets and presents fresh areas to the printing point by moving laterally with the carriage.
