The American Index was a roller-inked index machine with two distinct variations,
the No. 2 is slightly beefier than the No. 1 and most are stamped "583c" rather than a true serial number.
Model numbers are not marked on the machine. Sold in Britan as
"The Globe", and some examples are marked "Lyon Manufacturing Co., Toronto, Canada". Name variants include "American Globe",
"Champignon", "New American","Sterling" and possibly "Boston Crown".
Appeared in 1912 Sears, Roebuck catalog for $4.98 as the "New American", but not the Odell-like machine of the same name.

Known name variants: "Congress", "Eagle", "Elgin", "Fleet", and "Surety" in the U.S., also "Armstrong" in England, "Herald" in France, "Europa" and "Favorite" in Germany.
"Merchantile" name variant was sold in the U.S. by Montgomery Ward.
"Pullman A" name variant sold in the U.S. by Sears Roebuck.
