1952 Royal Quiet De Luxe

Serial #AG-2498440

This is my 2nd Quiet De Luxe. It's a 1952, two years older than my '54. They are essentially the exact same machine, although this year's styling has a different ribbon cover design, it's dark brown instead of grey, and the ribbon reverse and color select controls are both visible thru the front via chromed ornamentation. I'm still amazed at how for some reason these '50s US-made Royals used a rubber on their platens that just lasts. My KMG and my two QDL's all have nice and rubbery platens, still in great shape. This one is the smaller 12-pitch, Elite typeface. It's a great typer. These QDL's are among my favorites to use. They sound great, they feel great, they look great, and they hold up amazingly well thru the years. This one came with perfect case as well. It was $10 for the typewriter, the case, a '70s cassette recorder with mic, and also a VERY cool '40s Monroe mechanical adding calculator. It was a good score.

I've spent my life as a mechanical and electronics tinkerer, bikes, cars, lawnmowers, appliances, cameras, audio gear, guitars, amplifiers, and pedal steel guitars. I was trained as a typist for 2 years back in the late 70's on IBM Selectric II's. At home I recall my mother having an Olympia SM3. More recently we got our daughter a typewriter for Christmas, and that somehow sparked my own personal interest in these fine and interesting machines. Now it's a habit that just won't quit. Daily searches on Craigslist, frequent trips to antique stores & malls, garage sales, etc. It's a fun and healthy addiction.
