1936 Remington Portable 5

Serial #V845505

The serial number's tucked away behind the right key bank. Self Starter!

I was meeting with a picker having seen the photos of the several typewriters I was buying from him, and he had picked this one up on his way. I was stunned by the two-tone green and black paint. The green, which is darker in person than it is in the photos, is almost a hunter green, and is so vibrant that I thought this might be a repaint, but it looks original. I assumed the small, reddish patches (in the photos) were minor rust, but they seem to be on the surface of the paint, though I daren't rub them off for fear of damaging the paint. The drawstring needs to be replaced, which is why the picker unloaded it to me at the price he did. I'll add the repair to my list of winter projects. I love the Self-Starter key. I half-expected to start writing my novel when I pressed it.

I have suddenly become a typewriter collector. It started with one purchase and has ballooned to a collection of more than forty in less than a year. I'm learning fast but I'm still a novice compared to others in the typosphere, including here in Toronto, where I haunt thrift shops and antique markets, and even the occasional basement. I'm a former magazine writer and published author, and a professional book editor by trade, and I learned to type on manuals despite the proliferation of electrics, so I like to think I come by my sudden and rather manic passion honestly.
