Found on Craigslist in good condition except the the platen won’t turn because the feed rollers are fused to it. There’ll be a type sample (elite!) when the platen comes back from Short.
In the gallery, see the very interesting comparison with the same model from one year earlier, showing some significant differences that I haven’t seen mentioned before, like the entire basket.
Status: Typewriter Hunter
While I find all of mankind's inventions interesting, I am most enchanted by the human-scale arts and devices, the ones that can be created (and repaired) in a home workshop or studio; the ones that can be understood by looking at them; the ones that do something useful or stir admiration. Typewriters work for me.
Platen wouldn't rotate, dontcha know.
Note these differences between the 1922 and 1923 Underwood Standard Portable models: 1. the location of the shift locks, in green 2. the outline of the front panel, in orange 3. the shape of the basket and segment and how the typebars lie. This implies differences in linkages, though I haven't checked that yet.
