1945 Smith Corona Sterling

Serial #4A128835

Found without a case and quite dirty. The keytops are interesting---they look like they are hard rubber or plastic but are actually stamped metal buttons press-fitted over the right-angle bends of the key levers (perhaps why a couple of them are missing).

It has been tuned up and cleaned up and is now usable and presentable.

While I find all of mankind's inventions interesting, I am most enchanted by the human-scale arts and devices, the ones that can be created (and repaired) in a home workshop or studio; the ones that can be understood by looking at them; the ones that do something useful or stir admiration. Typewriters work for me.

The keytops are just light sheetmetal stamped into a shallow bowl shape and pressed onto the flattened ends of the keylevers. They pop off easily and that's why two have been lost and others are dented. I'm glad this design did not catch on.

What a nice sweep to that lever!

I know they get a lot of use, but this is ridiculous!
