1939 Royal KHM

Serial #2233923

Though it was apparently common, this is the first time I've found a machine with a custom key; in lieu of the @ sign, this one features the symbol for Japanese yen.

This office model came to me when I stopped at a curio shop just west of Dundee, Oregon; the owner of the shop, an elderly veteran from Boston, didn't have any typewriters on display, but I asked if he had any around, and he agreed to show me this one from the back of the shop after he made certain I wanted it for typing and keeping rather than chopping the keys. The ribbon is in first rate shape, and the font is small with excellent serifs; it types perfectly, with the a sitting a little above the line of type.

I started collecting typewriters in 1996 when my employer at an old newsstand in Kalamazoo, MI gave me her mother's Underwood Elliot Fisher Noiseless; I love these machines and learning how to repair and maintain them. The Noiseless was the medium for a zine I wrote through the nineties and into the oughts, and my nine-year-old daughter now types regularly.
