1939 Hermes Baby

Serial #175909

One of my Exes -

I bought this Hermes Baby to redeem that last one I had that didn't work so well. This one was filthy dirty but had good paint and an International English keyboard, so I went for it.

I disassembled the Baby for cleaning inside and out, removing decades' worth of dirt and debris, scrubbing the type bars, and unjamming stuck keys (about half or more were stuck when I first got it). The typewriter was stripped of all the old felt; felt was replaced on all the felted surfaces - the top and bottom case lids, plus top and sides of the machine. The carriage was cleaned and lubricated for proper movement and the upper and lower case were re-aligned. The worn "E" key was repainted. The painted surfaces underwent a deep cleaning but I steered clear of the decals. The exterior paint was in excellent shape on the machine, as were the original decals and the original gray ribbon spools.

I owned it for maybe a few weeks before selling it. Call it catch-and-release if you will, but I like knowing this fine machine has been restored to type for some years to come.
