1930 Underwood 5

Serial #3643485-5

Comparison of 1915 Underwood 5 and 1930 Underwood 5

A young writer of science fiction found this Underwood in an advanced state of rust at an estate sale in a barn. She asked me if I could make it work again so that she could use it in her writing.

Every moving part had significant rust; in fact, the carriage had rusted to the rails and was completely frozen.

I doused the rusted parts with penetrating oil and gently coaxed parts back into motion. Amazingly (or predictably given that it’s an Underwood 5), once the typewriter began to type again, it typed wonderfully with a fine and solid imprint and a fast and lively touch. How incredibly durable these machines are!

The carriage is easily removed by securing the draw band, removing the front scale plate, lifting the front of the carriage up slightly, and drawing the carriage off the way rod to the right.

Carriage shift.

The serial number is stamped on the main frame next to the right ribbon spool

The carriage has a different serial number from the main body: 3633852. It is also from 1930 and is stamped and written on the carriage.

See last photo for comparison of 1915 Underwood 5 and 1930 Underwood 5. It appears that little changed in 15 years.

I'm a novice collector with a very small collection of mostly nonfunctional typewriters. I enjoy tinkering and repairs, so I am slowly but surely putting these typewriters back into service.
