The Typestar "typewriter"* was marketed as such in the US, and this Japanese version includes both the typewriter function and the Japanese language word processing function in one tiny wedge. The first functional typewriter I every bought myself, the PEN24 gave me some of my first lessons in the digital age. It also helped me type many of my college essays until I switched to the Mac SE the following year, and served as a great portable - the reason I bought this one which is virtually unused. Love it! Works great except for a slightly stubborn 9 key.

*Thermal printer and eight-character LCD display. Prints on thermal paper without ribbon or on regular paper with the increasingly difficult to find IR-50II carbon ribbons. I suspect but don't know that the 05 on the back indicates it as a Typestar 5 variant.

From Toronto Canada. Tokyo-based entrepreneur since 1998 and meditation teacher since 2000. Learned to type in Grade 9 following mind-altering lunches and still experience flashbacks while typing. Mother did shorthand and typed 90 wpm as stenographer, dad pecked out haiku on his old typewriter as long as I remember. Moved to thermal printing, 8-character display CanoWord Pen 24 in 1986 when my typewriter broke, then to FujiXerox, Mac and iPhone. Bought my first typewriter of the new millennium (a Lettera 32) in March 2015. Muscle memory has graduated to neural reboot--every moment at the typewriter brings back fresh memories of type-happy childhood and visions of literary grandeur. Use typewriter for inspiration/rough drafts and computer/iPhone (Scrivener/Evernote) for polishing.
