197X Smith Corona Electra 220 Serial # 6ELE 267601G 197X Smith Corona Electra 220 typewriter, Serial # 6ELE 267601G Javier Vazquez del Olmo's 197X Smith Corona Electra 220 typewriter. 2015-11-13 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Javier Vazquez del Olmo: 197X Smith Corona Electra 220 Serial # 6ELE 267601G At last I got a fully functional typebar electric typewriter, and IĀ“m very happy with it.

What a strange concept of "portable" the guys at SCM had, because even if it has a top quality case carrying it around is a nightmare. Too heavy, but at least it is so satisfying to use it that I donĀ“t complain too much about the weight.

The only problem I had was the plug. Surprisingly, itĀ“s a SCM made for the Spanish market, and in the specs it clearly says itĀ“s prepared for our 230 V / 50 Hz electrical current but IĀ“d never fathom why they put an american plug.I had to get an adapter, but after that I finally managed to try it.

If I had to complain about something is the ear splitting noise it makes. The typeslugs hit the platen so hard that after some time using it you are completely isolated from the outer world. I asked if anyone at home was complaining about the noise, but they said it just sounds like any other one. IĀ“m a nuisance anyway.

Another thing I donĀ“t know is that "jeweled escapement" thingy at the types basket. Does the escapement have something special? And I couldnĀ“t find the datecode...

The first typewriter I saw was my grandpa´s Olivetti Linea 98 at the office. It was just a curio for me. Then I was given a Nakajima, which I didn´t use and my grandfather took it from me because it was easier to handle than the bulky Linea 98. Now I own that typewriter, and I started a little collection in Valladolid, Spain. The Nakajima, which is "my" typewriter only returned home in 2017, almost 20 years later, when he wanted a better typewriter.

A collection that started small grew into something bigger, a nuisace for my family and a great source of satisfaction for me.
