1973 Consul 203 Serial # 3-203 207269 1973 Consul 203 typewriter, Serial # 3-203 207269 Javier Vazquez del Olmo's 1973 Consul 203 typewriter. 2015-08-22 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Javier Vazquez del Olmo: 1973 Consul 203 Serial # 3-203 207269 The price: 1,5 Euros.
The result: An ogre.

I got this beast almost for free, and there is a fairly common reason for that. These heavy office typewriter have ended up stored in warehouses, and after years there someone decides they´ve to go out. Most of times they go directly to the junkyard, but some times someone decides to put a symbolic price tag on it and hope some crazed typewriter maniac would take it. And there I was.

All this time of neglecting was clearly visible, but I think I´ve managed to clean everything. The basket was full of dust and the typebars didn´t move properly, besides, it needed heavy oiling. But as it tends to happen with such monsters, they can whitstand this and much more. It works fine, and it´s surprisingly quiet. The only problem is the size. It´s gargantuan!

Regarding identification, I´ve followed Mark Rosenzweig´s comments on his Consul 221 to determine the date and model: The first number of the prefix is the year of manufacture (3 for 1973) and the second number is the model (203)

The first typewriter I saw was my grandpa´s Olivetti Linea 98 at the office. It was just a curio for me. Then I was given a Nakajima, which I didn´t use and my grandfather took it from me because it was easier to handle than the bulky Linea 98. Now I own that typewriter, and I started a little collection in Valladolid, Spain. The Nakajima, which is "my" typewriter only returned home in 2017, almost 20 years later, when he wanted a better typewriter.

A collection that started small grew into something bigger, a nuisace for my family and a great source of satisfaction for me.
