1963 Simpsons (Imperial) Model 6 Serial # 6BA-194T 1963 Simpsons (Imperial) Model 6 typewriter, Serial # 6BA-194T Uwe Wachtendorf's 1963 Simpsons (Imperial) Model 6 typewriter. 2014-12-20 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Uwe Wachtendorf: 1963 Simpsons (Imperial) Model 6 Serial # 6BA-194T This Imperial sold through the Simpson's department store chain (no Simpson's category) in Canada. It is, for the lack of a more eloquent expression, a wonderfully wonky machine. None of the keys/levers that are a part of the tabulator system are labelled, nor do any two of the three even look alike, so it creates the impression that it was designed by three uncompromising people who didn't get along with each.

There is of course more weirdness: The number 1 key is inexplicably located on the right end of the second bank; the ribbon cover folds open toward you, so you have to turn the typewriter around to get at the ribbon; and the type angle is so extreme that you have to practically hover over the machine to read what is going on the page.

And like Frankenstein's monster, this Imperial portable has a similar set of bolts sticking out of its neck, but these are used to reverse the ribbon travel.

I've formed a deep bond with this typewriter because of its quirky details, and I think it cuts a very handsome profile; most important though it types rather nicely and is likely to stay on the short rotation list for a long time.
