1961 IBM Model C Executive Serial # 2080507 1961 IBM Model C Executive typewriter, Serial # 2080507 Michael Hoehne's 1961 IBM Model C Executive typewriter. 2015-10-01 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Michael Hoehne: 1961 IBM Model C Executive Serial # 2080507 I have wanted an Executive since I first saw one in the ā€˜70s but didnā€™t really expect to ever have one. So when I saw this one on a table at a yard sale, well....

The ā€œDate Installedā€ was 6-9-61 as per the card pasted inside _and_ the service record inside---ya gotta love that thorough IBM. So this was bought the same year that the Selectric was introduced---but the Selectric didnā€™t have proportional-spaced type---HA!

The typeface is Testimonial (Code 71). Iā€™ll post a type sample when I can produce one. It came with five new carbon ribbons and a spare platen.

It has some problems, though: half of the slugs (the center-right half) do not make it to the paper. It sounds like itā€™s trying, though, so Iā€™ll keep working on it. There was an empty ribbon spool rattling around inside; maybe it bent something.

While I find all of mankind's inventions interesting, I am most enchanted by the human-scale arts and devices, the ones that can be created (and repaired) in a home workshop or studio; the ones that can be understood by looking at them; the ones that do something useful or stir admiration. Typewriters work for me.
