1958 Smith Corona Secretarial Serial # 62E-5064293C19 1958 Smith Corona Secretarial typewriter, Serial # 62E-5064293C19 Uwe Wachtendorf's 1958 Smith Corona Secretarial typewriter. 2015-05-12 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Uwe Wachtendorf: 1958 Smith Corona Secretarial Serial # 62E-5064293C19 I became more interested in mid-century Smith-Corona standards after trying to figure out how another model I owned fit into the bigger picture (http://typewriterdatabase.com/1952-smithcorona-secretarial.3031.typewriter), so I visited my local Smith-Corona Superstore yesterday and picked up another machine from the era.

There's certainly no substitute for owning several machines produced a few years apart to gain insight into the evolution of a design, and this Secretarial has helped me to better understand the Smith-Corona standards built during the '50s.

Interestingly, it was a 70+ year-old woman who had owned this machine, and an Olympia SG1 which I had also bought. As we were discussing typewriters in general, she placed a hand on the Olympia's ribbon cover, and unprompted, informed me that "this is a far better typewriter."

Having now used the Secretarial to type out a few pages I can say that it's a decent enough machine, but have to agree with its previous owner as to where it falls in comparison to the SG1.

UPDATE: Changed the model name to reflect how it appeared in Smith-Corona brochures and added an image of the machine from such a brochure.
