1958 Royal FP Serial # FPE 11-6488191 1958 Royal FP typewriter, Serial # FPE 11-6488191 Plante and Doole-Fisher Typewriters's 1958 Royal FP typewriter. 2018-03-07 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Plante and Doole-Fisher Typewriters: 1958 Royal FP Serial # FPE 11-6488191 I received a telephone call from the television-station that did an interview of me regarding my collection in the summer of 2012, informing me that a viewer was trying to contact me, willing to possibly donate typewriters. As it turns out, SHE LIVED AT THE END OF THE STREET. A street of 10 houses. A very nice elderly lady who lived in a type-capsule of a house, directly retracted from the 1970's, with wooden wall paneling and mustard yellow carpeting. She had this pink/grey Royal FPE and a 1940's Underwood SS Wide-Carriage, which was missing various keys and was suffering from age-related problems. I was happy to take the FPE, of course, it being in a more rarer colour-scheme besides the common two-tone grey. The Underwood I took and donated to a vintage themed cafe.
The Royal turned out to be in really good shape. At first it seemed the clear-coat was peeling all over the machine. However, it turned out the factory's protection wrap was still covering the largest portion of the typewriter. After an extensive amount of time, having covered the typewriter for such a long time, I finally managed to completely remove the aged and sticky protective plastic and discovered the paint was in astounding condition.
The machine has been my work-horse from the day I got it. It has been by "Go-to" typewriter, and I think I have well over a 1000 pages typed away on this typewriter.
Because I used to own a standard carriage Royal HH from 1954 which I used for parts, I have an extra platen in lay-away, in case the current and original platen wears out. However, as of now that is not yet the case. The machine types absolutely flawlessly, and besides some basic maintenance and service, this office model Royal required really no significant work to come out like this.
A happy survivor that still sees regular use. The machine came with two RoyType ribbon cartridge. A product of Royal that was available for a very short time in the late 1950's and early 1960's to promote easy replacement and no messy fingers. They are rare as it was not a successful product so I am happy to have them! Luckily, they are both intact.
The FP plays a huge part in the reason why Royal is one of my favourite typewriter brands.
