This mis-stored and Ill-handled machine was my first desktop, which I thankfully got for free. Those typebars used to be almost vertical. It took a month of constant Liquid-Wrench to get it /this/ far.

At first, the carriage wouldn't move an inch. And that looks better than it used to... A good deal of that rust came from the carriage, and a lot of what was there got removed! It looks like water was coming through the carriage and down into the body of the machine, causing this damage.

As you can see, the carriage's body panels are quite deceptive as to the extent of the damage… Only after the platen was removed (which I had no idea how to do so at the time) did the damage get hinted at.

Another interesting part (or more accurately the lack thereof) of this machine is the damage to the rear right corner. The leg & the frame it attaches to are long gone.
