1950 Imperial 58 Serial # 341919X 1950 Imperial 58 typewriter, Serial # 341919X Javier Vazquez del Olmo's 1950 Imperial 58 typewriter. 2015-03-18 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Javier Vazquez del Olmo: 1950 Imperial 58 Serial # 341919X This massive typewriter came along with the Underwood 3 I expected to be dead, and the story repeated. After some minor adjustments and a good oiling it´s fully active and ready to get some heavy typing.

It´s big, huge, gigantic, enormous... It has the largest carriage in my collection, with a whooping over 200 columns, and a match made in heaven: really small typeface. If you look at its back, the tabulator system seems to have been added later, covering part of the decals.

Works quite well, and it´s definitely entertaining to use. The carriage moves like a freight train, and pulling the return lever makes you work hard and it sounds beautifully. Yeah, I know. I pay a lot of attention to the sound, call me weirdo, but sound says a lot about a typewriter.

And a little extra: you can see me in the knob. Ok, maybe it´s not an extra.

The first typewriter I saw was my grandpa´s Olivetti Linea 98 at the office. It was just a curio for me. Then I was given a Nakajima, which I didn´t use and my grandfather took it from me because it was easier to handle than the bulky Linea 98. Now I own that typewriter, and I started a little collection in Valladolid, Spain. The Nakajima, which is "my" typewriter only returned home in 2017, almost 20 years later, when he wanted a better typewriter.

A collection that started small grew into something bigger, a nuisace for my family and a great source of satisfaction for me.
