1943 Royal Quiet De Luxe Serial # A-1159122 1943 Royal Quiet De Luxe typewriter, Serial # A-1159122 Ian Brumfield's 1943 Royal Quiet De Luxe typewriter. 2017-09-19 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Ian Brumfield: 1943 Royal Quiet De Luxe Serial # A-1159122 I was providing some typewriters for a short film, and during a break in filming that day I bought this typewriter from the father of one of the crew members. He had no idea of the history of the machine or anything like that, and I have discovered the following since then:

This typewriter was manufactured in the early months of 1943. I discovered that through the serial number database. I then saw an old 1942 Royal advertisement that explained what a recent governent resolution meant. On March 6th, 1942, the United States government declared that all typewriter sales would cease, including the rental and rebuilding of machines. On March 15 in compliance with the government, Royal drastically scaled back its production of standard and portable machines. All of the machines manugactured after March 15th, 1942, were built specifically for use by the government, the armed forces, or for war contractors. That means that this QDL is one of those machines! It is also approximately 7k machines away from the production halt, meaning that (so far) this machine is the closest known to the production halt!
