You need to "demount" the typewriter (hence the name) pulling its frame by means of the handles located each side, after pulling out a device located behind the typewriter.
I've done this, and of course is easier to pull out than to "remount" the typewriter.
Of course, the Demountable is not the only typewriter that allows you to take the mechanism out (and, in this case, also the carriage). Mercedes Nª 5 and Briton are other examples.
The difference between them, is that in the Demountable you can not change the ribbon if you not pull out the frame. In my humble opinion, not a very good idea: Demount is an easy and straightforward task, remount is... remount is... well, we'll talk about it some day.
The keys in my Demountable are a little bit dirty and is not easy work to clean them. You can see a picture showing number 5 key and number 6 key. the first is dark, the second is clear. There is a (clear) reason: In the "6" key the celluloid cover is lost... It is the dirty cellluloid, after decades of use. Of course, you can patiently dismount every key, take off the celluloid cover, clean it thorougly, and then put everything in order again.
Not an easy job, believe me.
The serial number is located in the typewriter body AND in the carriage. There are two different numbers in other parts of the typewriteer (on of them in the cast iron frame)
