1912 Smith Premier 10 Serial # 114899 1912 Smith Premier 10 typewriter, Serial # 114899 Javier Vazquez del Olmo's 1912 Smith Premier 10 typewriter. 2017-10-31 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Javier Vazquez del Olmo: 1912 Smith Premier 10 Serial # 114899 I think I´ve been quite lucky with this oldie.

First of all, I got it at a more than decent price. This typewriter is not that rare in Spain, but the dizzying amount of keys dizzies sellers who put dizzingly outrageous price tags on them.

Then, the seller shipped it inside a cardboard box without anything else. The box arrived suspiciously shaped as an Smith Premier 10-A as there was no filler at all. I wonder which protective deity has watched over it, because it has arrived home undamaged. Besides, they don´t make typewriters (or mostly anything) this way now. This thing was undoubtedly made to last.

And it works. No ribbon, but everything inside this monster works. And I love the escapement design in this one. Can´t be simpler!

As an additional bonus, it has a Spanish keyboard!

Now the bad part: Missing spacebar and margin release key. At least these functions work fine, so it´s just a matter of getting replacements (or making new ones). And no ribbon, which is to be expected.

Finally, this typewriter is really dirty. Apart from the usual encrusted dust, I´ve found cat fur on it, and all chromed parts sport a disgusting brownish tone (probably) thanks to the cloud of cigar smoke it lived in.

The first typewriter I saw was my grandpa´s Olivetti Linea 98 at the office. It was just a curio for me. Then I was given a Nakajima, which I didn´t use and my grandfather took it from me because it was easier to handle than the bulky Linea 98. Now I own that typewriter, and I started a little collection in Valladolid, Spain. The Nakajima, which is "my" typewriter only returned home in 2017, almost 20 years later, when he wanted a better typewriter.

A collection that started small grew into something bigger, a nuisace for my family and a great source of satisfaction for me.
