1891 Williams 1 Serial # 1590 1891 Williams 1 typewriter, Serial # 1590 Martin Howard's 1891 Williams 1 typewriter. 2020-11-07 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Martin Howard: 1891 Williams 1 Serial # 1590 The unique and wonderful design of the Williams typewriter has the type bars arranged in two symmetrical fans, one on either side of the carriage. With an articulated action they hop up and over to the top of the platen giving visible typing. However, only a few lines were seen at a time before the paper advanced into the rear holding cylinder.

The Williams typewriter had a wonderful responsive touch to the keys and was a great machine to type on. It had considerable success with a model 6 being produced before the company went out of business in 1909.

The curved keyboard models were only made during the first year of production, after which they had straight keyboards. These early curved keyboard models had glass key tops and frames beautifully decorated with floral motifs.

I am a collector of 19th century typewriters and have built a collection that shows the remarkable ingenuity and beauty of the world's first typewriters. I have always been interested in the beginnings of a machine when there is an eruption of approaches to making it. Early typewriters are an exceptional example of this incubation period.
