1928 Melotyp Melotyp Serial # 37045 1928 Melotyp Melotyp typewriter, Serial # 37045 Guillermo Fernandez Boan's 1928 Melotyp Melotyp typewriter. 2017-05-20 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Guillermo Fernandez Boan: 1928 Melotyp Melotyp Serial # 37045 As usually, Mr. Robert Messenger (bow) is an open book, even when you are looking for information about not that common typewriters (in this particular case, "musicwriters").
If you are as astonished as I was the first time I've heard about this machine, just take a look at his website: http://oztypewriter.blogspot.com.ar/2012/09/on-this-day-in-typewriter-history_24.html
"It is believed that only 10 of these machines were made and five were exported to the US in 1938. Four of these machines are now in museums or other musical institutions, and only one is in private hands.ā€¯
As with my Keaton Musicwriter, really I dont think so: Even if Melotyp / Nototyp are scarce, there were possibly dozens make (or even more).
They descend from the thrust action Adlers (very common typewriters eighty years ago, and fairly common nowadays) and despite they were not a success as music writers, they were manufactured by typewriters manufacturers. Not the individual job of an individual artisan.
Then, I suppose (strange as this musicwriter is) that just ten is a very conservative number. Perhaps a number between fifty and one hundred is a better guess.
My example is in awesome condition (and looking at other examples of the make, that is really uncommon). It is complete, it is operative (look at the Typeface Specimen Sample), and the decals are as good as new.
The serial number is stamped on the cast iron body (underneath the typewriter) and on the right side of the carriage.
It would be very nice to find the Instruction Manual (or a reprint, pdf, et al) in order to write something more "musical", you know.
