1917 Continental Standard Serial # 110402 1917 Continental Standard typewriter, Serial # 110402 Javier Vazquez del Olmo's 1917 Continental Standard typewriter. 2016-05-27 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Javier Vazquez del Olmo: 1917 Continental Standard Serial # 110402 It´s needed a little while to be operative, but finally here it comes!

What an outstanding typewriter. It´s gone the usual process of getting it in miserable condition, sending it to the best typewriter doctor and getting it back even better than I expected. An amazing job by Pascual again!

That restoration has brought back to life the many and varied quirks of this typewriter, which include a right-handed return lever, a false left return lever which is the carriage release, a caps lock system out of the keyboard and something that looks suspiciously as a double shift system (as in Japanese word processors) but in fact it packs the backspacer and the ribbon color selector. Could you ask for more?

Why, please, do!

It types flawlessly, which is nice for a nearly century old machine. And it looks beyond great. And the platen feels like brand new. And it has received several brand new nuts and bolts (long life guaranteed). And the best is yet to come, because with such equipment one can´t help but feeling inspired to write something, which in the end is what I like best.

The first typewriter I saw was my grandpa´s Olivetti Linea 98 at the office. It was just a curio for me. Then I was given a Nakajima, which I didn´t use and my grandfather took it from me because it was easier to handle than the bulky Linea 98. Now I own that typewriter, and I started a little collection in Valladolid, Spain. The Nakajima, which is "my" typewriter only returned home in 2017, almost 20 years later, when he wanted a better typewriter.

A collection that started small grew into something bigger, a nuisace for my family and a great source of satisfaction for me.
