The Typewriter Database 1908 American 8 Serial # 21528 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Tyler Anderson: 1908 American 8 Serial # 21528 Talk about simple mechanisms. Out of all the machines I have worked on, only the Daugherty has a simpler design or fewer parts. This bad boy operates on singular principle of the lever. Each keylever has a post with a rounded top, on which the whole lever pivots. The central keycomb is what directs the typebar, nothing else. Thus not only does the machine likely have perfect alignment at all times, it has a very interesting and light touch.

Turns out, the alignment can be effected by the posts on which the levers rest on. This machine got beat up a bit at some point, so it does not have the perfect alignment I otherwise expected. It types alright though, except for certain keys on the far edges. O in particular doesn't like to print nicely all the time.

The escapement is outstandingly designed, at the least.
