The Typewriter Database 1901 Sun 2 Serial # 18040 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Martin Howard: 1901 Sun 2 Serial # 18040 This was the first keyboard typewriter to have used sheet metal in the construction of the main frame, rather than all cast iron, enabling it to be sold for the low price of $40.

Instead of using a ribbon, the type-bars brush against a small inked roller. This small roller, when struck by the type-bar, swings to make contact with a larger inked roller which acts as the ink reservoir. The larger roller is positioned under the nickel-plated disc (size of a quarter) seen in the picture.

I am a collector of 19th century typewriters and have built a collection that shows the remarkable ingenuity and beauty of the world’s first typewriters. I have always been interested in the beginnings of a machine when there is an eruption of approaches to making it. Early typewriters are an exceptional example of this incubation period.
